Eileen and Carnival

February 22, 2025

Walked down to the train station around noon to meet Eileen coming in from Seville. It’s a bit of a slog with a suitcase and a bag of salt (a story Eileen can tell). We stopped at Restaurante San Francisco Uno for our big mid-day meal. She got settled in the spare bedroom. A quiet evening of recovery and reading.

Adventuring out to Museo de Titere, located in Puerta de Tierra, the 18th century monument and defensive wall, that today it separates historic Cádiz from modern Cádiz. There are a couple museums in the wall, we are interested in the puppet museum.

This collection spanned 1920 to the 1990’s. This particular puppet is from Burma 1985.
Java 1985
These puppets are about 4 1/2’ tall
Spain 1995

This is an interesting museum if you like the art and intricacies of puppets.

We took Eileen to our favorite restaurant near the Central Market, Ancá Lidia. I had my favorite house salad to share and fried anchovies. Great food and wonderful staff have kept us coming back.

Can’t get enough of these fried anchovies

The Cádiz Cathedral

Eileen wanted to see the big 18th century cathedral, it is very different than most cathedrals we’ve seen on this trip with an interior of marble, unusual alter and choir chamber.

A unique solid silver monstrance. What is a monstrance? It or an ostensorium is for the display of some object of piety.

Hand carved Choir with saints and cherubs playing instruments.

Two organs are mounted above the choir

An amusing sign outside of a restaurant on our way home. We pass this frequently and it always makes me smile.
Little replicas of penitents in traditional clothing. Eileen pointed out that the shop owner wanted to make sure there wasn’t any misunderstanding.
Our Plaza is being transformed for Carnival.
This was actually earlier when Pete and I were at our local gelato stand.

Our time in Cádiz is winding down and we are really sad to be leaving in a couple days.

  1. It’s been very nice to follow your travels.

  2. Thanks for not mentioning my getting off the train three stops too early (one should read better Spanish than I do) & scrambling around (thank you, Mr Google) to get to the correct stop with my 3 pounds of Spanish sea salt.

Really, I knew I was making a mistake when I got the 2nd pound, but…if you’re already down that slope, might as well get that 3rd pound & buy out their stock: in for a penny…

I really appreciate Spanish food & restaurant prices: here in London everything is so much more expensive! It’s a completely different world. Unfortunately, I suspect the difference does not go to the workers.

    1. You are a good traveler and we all have unexpected adventures in countries where we don’t speak the language and even when we do. Didn’t want to throw you under the train.
